Can I register domains if I don't have a hosting provider?

Yes, you can register domains before you find a hosting provider. We automatically park domains you register with us. A temporary parked page displays when visitors go to your Web site. The parked page indicates you are reserving the site until you find a hosting provider and upload your site.

    Changing DNS

Any time you make a DNS (domain name server) change it takes around 24-48 hours to complete. During this propagation time routers all over the world are updating their cache. This causes your site to be up and down randomly during the first 48 hours for different people at different times. Think of DNS like a zip code. If you don't put a zip code on your mail the post office doesn't know where to send it. Domains are the same way if they don't have the DNS the internet doesn't know what server to send your request to.

    Making The Changes

Every registrar has a different procedure for changing your domains DNS, however they are all done basically the same way. The welcome email you received from us provides you with the name servers you need to change your domain to. You will then take those name servers to wherever you bought your domain, and fill them in for your domain name.

Your name servers should look like...

    * ns1.simondavidson.net
    * ns2.simondavidson.net

(do not use the above unless told so in your welcome email)

    Domain Redirects

    Overview

Redirects are used when you want to point a specific url or web page to another location. For example, you want your visitors to be redirected to DomainB.com/Order.HTML when they visit DomainA.Com/Sales.HTML.
    Steps

    1. Select the type of redirect you want to create from the drop down menu. You have two choices:
    * Temporary - Temporary redirects will not update the visitor's bookmarks.
    * Permanent - A permanent redirect will notify the visitor's browser to update any bookmarks that are linked to the page that is being redirected.
    2. There will be two empty text boxes on the page. The first text box is following the root path of your current domain. Enter the path to the file you want to redirect in the first empty text box.

EXAMPLE: http://DomainA.com/Sales.HTML (Just enter Sales.HTML or the directory and filename you are redirecting.)

Enter the domain name and path or url you want your visitor to be redirected to in the second empty text box.

NOTE: http://DomainB.Com/Order.HTML (Just enter the domain name and directory/filename of the new location.)

    1. Click on the Add button.
    2. A confirmation page will display the redirection you have created.
    3. Click on the Go Back link.
    4. When the page loads, you will see a table with your newly created redirects containing the following information, split into four columns:
    * Directory - This entry will be the location of the file you are redirecting.
    * Redirect URL - This entry will be the new location you are redirecting the visitor.
    * Type - This entry will be the type you chose in Step 1 above.
    * Remove - Click on the X icon to remove the Redirect. When the next page loads, click on the Yes button to remove the Redirect. A confirmation page will display "YOUR_REDIRECTED_PATH has been successfully removed."

    Registering Domains

If your domain is available, you can register it for a period of 1 year. You can use your domain to build your business and assist you in creating a dynamic online identity. You may also want to consider registering multiple domain names to:

    * Keep your competition from registering a domain name that draws customers to them instead of you.
    * Promote the different products and services you offer.
    * Drive more traffic to your Web site.
    * Enjoy more opportunities to market to, and be listed on, search engines.
    * Create distinct advertising strategies that reach different target markets.
    * Provide customers more ways to find you when searching the Internet.
    * Capture common misspellings of your domain name, instead of sending visitors to an error page.
    * Protect your brand and online identity from those who may have unsavory purposes.

To get started, you need to check if the domain name you want is available.
    To Check a Domain's Availability

    1. Go to our Home Page.
    2. In the Domain Name Search field, enter the domain you want to register, and then select the domain extension from the list.
    3. Click Search Domain.

If the domain is available, follow the instructions to complete the checkout process. As you complete your registration, include valid contact information for each contact. ICANN, the governing body for domain names, requires valid information for your contact information (Registrant, Technical, Billing, and Administrative). If you enter false information, your domain is cancelled.

Your contact information is public and accessible through the Whois databases of most registrars. However, you can protect your privacy by registering your domain with us using our private domain name registration services.

    Subdomains

    Overview

A subdomain is a domain using your main domain and a prefix name. As an example, let's say our main domain is YourSite.com. We want to create a domain for our support department and direct visitors to a separate area on our web site. Our subdomain would use "Music" as the prefix and "YourSite.com" as the main domain. The example of putting these two together are shown below:

    EXAMPLE: Music.YourSite.com

Consider a subdomain a url for any area on your web site. You can create the prefix as any name you want based on your own personal preferences.
    Creating A Subdomain
    Steps

    1. Enter the prefix you want to use for the subdomain in the "Subdomain" text box. Based on our example above (support.cpx3demo.com), we would enter "support" as the "Subdomain" prefix.
    2. Once you place your cursor in the "Document Root" text box, it will automatically fill in the location of your subdomain. cPanel will use the prefix you chose in Step 1 above and add it to the root path, ie. "public_html/PREFIX" or in our example, it would be "public_html/support."

If you want to specify a particular location other than what cPanel automatically enters for you, modify the path according to your specific needs.
    3. Once you have completed the above, click on the Create button.
    4. The next screen will indicate if your subdomain was created successfully. Click on the Go Back button to return to the previous page.
    5. When the page loads, you will see a table with your newly created subdomain containing the following information, split into five columns:
    * Subdomains - This entry will be the "Prefix" you chose in Step 1 above.
    * Root Domain - This entry will be the domain used when creating your subdomain.
    * Document Root - This entry will be the "Document Root" path created in Step 2 above.
    * Redirection - If you have setup a redirection on the subdomain you are viewing, the "Redirection" column will state "redirected to PATH YOU ENTERED."
    * Actions - You have two choices:
o Manage Redirection - Click on this option to manage the redirection for the subdomain.
o Remove - Click on this option to remove the subdomain from the system completely.

    Transferring Domains to Us

Transferring a domain name to us often takes five days or less, but transfers may take up to seven days to complete. To transfer a domain name, we need some assistance from you.
    Domain Transfer Process:

    1. You should advise your administrative contact that the domain name is being transferred.
    2. We send an email message to your administrative contact by the next business day to request transfer approval.
    3. When this acceptance is received, we send a transfer request to the registry.
    4. The registry sends an email message to your current registrar.
    5. Most likely, your current registrar sends your administrative contact an email message to ask for your approval of the transfer to our registry. Please respond as directed.
    6. Your current registrar sends an acceptance or rejection notice to the registry.
    7. The registry sends an email notice of the acceptance or rejection to us.
    8. We send you an email message to inform you that the transfer is complete. Should the transfer fail, we will inform you.

    Helpful hints:

    * ICANN regulations prohibit transferring a domain name that has been registered or previously transferred within the last 60 days.
    * Verify that the email address for the domain name's administrative contact at your current registrar is correct. This is the address we are required to contact to request approval for the transfer.
    * After we have notified you that the transfer is complete, log on to your account and verify the contact information for your domain. Inaccurate or incomplete contact data may result in the cancellation of your domain name.
    * If the domain name is locked, the transfer will fail. Contact your current registrar in order to unlock your domain name.

NOTE: After we successfully transfer your domain, you can add zone files, such as an MX record, and manage your domain. We do not transfer existing records and content from the previous registrar.

What if I misspelled my domain when I registered it?

Unfortunately, we are unable to change or edit the spelling of a domain after it has been registered. We try to register the domain exactly as you enter it. Should the registration succeed, you are charged, even if the domain you entered was not what you actually intended to type.

You do have the option of cancelling the domain so that it is no longer registered to you, but cancelling does not entitle you to a refund of any part of your registration fee. Cancelling a domain is a permanent action.

When will my domain start working?

It usually takes 24-48 hours for a domain to fully replicate changes, additions, or deletions across all name servers. For you to see the effects, however, all depends on your ISP. Updates my be within minutes for your neighbour, but may take up to a week for you or vice-versa.

The reason for this is the name servers for your ISP update at different times. For various ISPs it is quite possible for DNS take a week or more to update.
